Hey — it's meteorologist John Hickey, and welcome to On With John Weather Consulting. Weather has always been fascinating to me. I grew up skiing with my parents most weekends in the winter in New England. In the warmer months, we were hiking, biking, and catching Red Sox games at Fenway. All of these activities were weather centric.
I wanted to learn how to make accurate weather predictions and how to share those forecasts with others who spent as much time outdoors as we did. I got my B.S. in meteorology from Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont. The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont was the perfect place for a guy like me to ski & bike my way to an education with Burke Mountain and the Kingdom Trails at the doorstep.
I worked at several TV stations across the Northeast before landing in Northeast PA. No matter where I worked, I've made it a point to explore the outdoor activities each area has to offer. Whether it was hiking the Finger Lakes, PA Grand Canyon, or Adirondacks; skiing my favorite areas in Vermont; or biking through the Champlain Valley, I've always felt most in touch with the areas I live by spending time outside in them.
Now, after nearly a decade and a half of doing weather on television, it was time to "shoot my shot" and tackle a new weather challenge. Private industry weather forecasting is the fastest growing sector in the world of meteorology.
